Horse Glossary of Terms and Expressions - "A"
The following is a list of the terms and expressions pertaining to horses, betting and horse racing whose title
starts with the letter "A".
Across The Board - A wager to win, place and show (three wagers).

Action - The way a horse moves.

Age - The horses age using January 1st (July 1st in the Southern hemisphere) as their birth date.

Agent - The business agent who books business on behalf of a jockey.

All Age Race - A race for any horse two years old and up.

All Out - A horse who is giving maximum effort.

All Weather Surface - Synthetic track surfaces.

Allowance - A race where the horses are not for sale; generally limited to horses that have not won one, two or three
non-claiming races.

Allowance Optional Claiming - A race that includes a mixture of horses not for sale and horses for sale at a set price.

Also Eligible - A designation for runners who are available to fill in for scratched horses.

Also Ran - A runner who failed to win, place or show.

American Stud Book - The master official record of all thoroughbred breedings and names.

Apprentice - A rookie jockey who is just starting out.

Apprentice Allowance - A reduction in weight carried when the horse is ridden by an apprentice jockey (also called the
"bug").
