December 28, 2008 Steve Thygersen Carla Gaines was high on her first time runner Point Encounter before his debut on opening day at the Santa Anita Winter/Spring meet. She is usually pretty "wait and see" on her horses. To say she was right on her young charge is an understatement, he broke sharp, ran professionally and just ran through the wire. He ran the 6.5 furlongs in 1:14/4 with fractions of :21/4, :44/2, 1:08/1 and 1:14/4. In comparison, Bob Black Jack ran :22/2, :44/4, 1:08/1 for his win in the Grade 1 Malibu. Think this one is pretty special indeed. Rarely do you see them get the whole package first out. A son of Belmont winner Point Given out of the Danzig mare Rita Rucker, this one should get even better as he stretches out, and that should make you all take pause and take note. Where to from here? Not announced yet, but figure we should see him again in February. |
